Quitting smoking is a journey that many people embark on, yet few fully understand the emotional twists and turns involved. For me, deciding to kick my nicotine habit was not just a health choice; it was about taking back my life. In this post, I’ll share the motivations that sparked my journey, the emotions I went through, and the reasons that led me to learn how to stop once and for all.

The Wake-Up Call

My wife and I were discussing our health. Neither of us had had a cold or the flu for over 10 years. Be careful what you say! My wife got the flu the next week. It was one of those nasty viruses that symptomatically cause a sore throat and cough. It lasted 3 weeks. I was the next to be infected. I had a slight cough, but I really began to struggle with shortness of breath. It intensified so rapidly that I asked my wife to take me to the Emergency Room. They administered an EKG, MRI, blood tests, a covid test and a multiple virus test. They kept me overnight for observation and released me the next afternoon. The diagnosis was Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) and a viral infection in my lungs.

I always knew that smoking was harmful. However, it took that eye-opening moment for me to grasp the implications fully. I felt a profound mix of fear about my future and sadness for the years stolen by this addiction. According to the CDC, smoking contributes to nearly 1 in 5 deaths in the U.S. alone—statistically speaking, I understood that every cigarette I smoked was putting my health further at risk.

I knew I had to make a change.
